UFC 205 Social Media Impressions 3x's More Than Superbowl

  • UFC 205 social media impressions 3X larger than Superbowl 50

During a recent episode of “The Herd” Colin Cowherd and Kristine Leahy discussed the social media impact of UFC 205, which is widely believed to be the biggest event in league history.

“And finally, there are some records out of UFC 205,” said Leahy. “All the records broken in that fight include the live gate at $17,700,000, attendance over 20,000, the weigh-in attendance got over 15,000, which is a new global UFC record.”

“Here is the crazy one. Social media impressions – 14 billion social media impressions. That includes things like tweets, likes, responses – BILLION – which is the most in UFC history. Just to compare that to something that we can understand, how many do you think the Super Bowl had – impressions?”

    Cowherd was close.

    “Five billion,” he answered.

The correct number, however, was lower still.

    “4.3,” responded Leahy.

    Cowherd summed it up.

“So the UFC fight had 14 billion social media impressions and the Super Bowl had one-third of that,” said Cowherd. “Do you know how many old, grumpy media guys I’ve been battling for years on this UFC? I’m like, ‘Newspaper guys, this is why you stayed at newspapers for 20 years while they were dying. You have no sense of business.'”

“The Northeast media wouldn’t even cover this for years. ‘Cause newspaper guys are old, cranky, and want to talk American League central baseball standings. This UFC thing’s been on fire for a decade, and big chunks of the American media just don’t pay attention.

“14 billion impressions!?! It’s killed boxing, and it makes wrestling look goofier than it’s ever looked.”
